So how do you stand out and impress a potential employer to select you? Vertex’s expert recruitment team will provide you with insights that can help guide you in the application process and give you tips that may help you launch your next career.

First Impressions

Let’s begin with the first impression: the resume. All of our applicants are initially screened by reviewing resumes, which is the first time we are “meeting” you. So how do you make your resume stand out and catch the attention of a recruiter? Here are tips on developing a resume that will help get you the interview.

When pursuing a job, it is important to provide relevant content in your resume. Most recruiters utilize programs and filters to only populate resumes that include specific keywords.

Ensure you tailor your resume to the job description for the position you are applying for so you have a better chance of being at the top of the list. It is equally important though that you do not limit your experience or confine your abilities.

If you are an aircraft mechanic, list the type of aircraft you have worked on in the past. When pursuing a job, it is important to provide relevant content in your resume. Recruiters utilize sophisticated software solutions that search keywords and competency phrases that align with the position specifications. Ensure you tailor your resume to the job description and basic qualifications for the position you are applying to so you have a better chance of being screened in as a viable candidate. It is equally important though that you do not limit your experience or confine your abilities; i.e., if you are an aircraft mechanic, list the various types of aircraft you have worked on in the past.

A well put together resume reinforces a positive professional appearance. Remember, less really can be more. Recruiters look for simple document formatting with impactful information about you. Speaking of simple, ditch the cover letter, a recruiter should see your qualifications for the position in your resume. Use your network to develop a well-rounded list of references and note “References Available Upon Request” at the bottom of your resume.

Before clicking ‘Submit’, thoroughly proofread your entire application. Leverage your network and references to review your resume and provide critical feedback.

The Interview

Congratulations on landing the interview, but now what? Circling back to the shift from in-person to virtual, interviews look and feel much different these days. Here is some advice on how to prepare and navigate a successful interview.

Although some things have changed, doing your due diligence is not one of them. Spend considerable time researching the company and the role you are interviewing for. Prepare yourself for potential questions you may be asked and have a mock interview with someone that can give you a candid critique.

The more you practice, the more comfortable you will be in the interview and that will show through to the interviewer. You should prepare a list of thoughtful questions to ask about the company and the expectation of the priorities of the position. Lastly, plan to summarize what you understood to be the critical competencies of the position and how you are uniquely qualified to add value to the company.

Always dress professionally, even if it is a virtual interview. For virtual interviews, make sure your background is as professional as possible and limit any potential distractions, interruptions, or noise. Silence your phone. It is best to join the virtual meeting early and test your equipment to avoid any technical issues. A good rule of thumb: early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable!

During the interview, think positive and maintain good posture and eye contact. This helps to not only bolster self-assurance but also make that confidence presence known. Be friendly, courteous, and smile. Be sure to speak as clearly as possible so the interviewer can hear you. Keep in mind, the interviewer wants to know about how your experience aligns with the position. Focus on selling the strong points that reflect your unique qualifications! Be honest. If you do not know something or do not have experience in an area, that is ok. Respond with, “I don’t know, but (insert explanation) is how I would plan to learn”. Take notes and ask your prepared questions. Be sure to obtain the interviewer’s contact info and send a thank you card that objectively reminds them why you are the best candidate for the position. Last but not least, be yourself and do not forget to state your value proposition and ask for the job! FAQs That Matter

An ideal resume length is 1-2 pages. If you cannot fit your qualifications on 1-2 pages, then it is ok to exceed this length.

It is not recommended to include a picture on your resume.

Professional attire is always a must to wear to an interview. It is better to overdress than underdress.

A cover letter is not recommended. Clearly articulate your qualifications in your resume and share them during your interview.

Bring multiple copies of your resume to the interview. Simple things like this can show good business acumen.

It is recommended to discuss the pay range before accepting the interview. The specific total compensation can be negotiated during the offer stage.
